This article explains Harper’s consideration of keeping hundreds of soldiers in Afghanistan to train the country’s security forces. Pressure from our allies to maintain a military presence in Afghanistan has been a major part of this mission, which would be primarily focused on training the local Afghan army and police forces. No specific number has been put on the table, but Defence Minister Peter Mac-Kay believes it will be in the range of about 400 troops. He emphasized strongly that Canadian soldiers would not be directly in the line of actions, but rather outside of Kandahar and would involve further training. Although many soldiers have been removed from Afghanistan, it seems being completely vacant from the area is not an option yet. In my opinion, I think this is a very good step as it shows the world Canadians are still doing their part, but in a much safer environment. Through this way we can still have a major impact in solving some of the core issues in the country, while being more proactive on securing the lives of our soldiers over seas.
